Last week, we took a hiatus from our Hilton Head Island vacation and had the most fun, spontaneous, overdue date night in Savannah, Georgia! It was one of those nights that made me fall in love all over again. One of those nights where I wonder what I would do without this man. One of those nights that I didn’t want to end. It was made possible thanks to my sister who has always been super great at loving people and both enjoys and is good (scratch that, GREAT) at gift giving. In this case it was a night stay at a hotel in Savannah! As if that weren’t enough, she and my parents watched Quinn for the night!
A Day in Savannah
We had already spent a full day with the family exploring in the steamy southern heat. We ate lunch at Paula Dean’s The Lady and Sons. WOW. The food was EPIC. AMAZING. I had braced myself to be underwhelmed because there is so much hype surrounding Paula and her Southern cuisine, but that woman knows her down home Southern cookin’ ya’ll!
We proceeded to eat and drink our way through Savannah for the remainder of the afternoon. We explored Savannah’s City Market, Byrd’s Famous Cookies, Chocolat by Adam Turoni, Wet Willies (touristy, I know; but with a heat index over 100 degrees that day we couldn’t resist) and more! After a hot but fun-packed afternoon, we said our goodbyes as the fam headed back to HHI with Quinn!
A Night in Savannah
I would be remiss if I didn’t point out the fact that I actually had baby-free time to shower, do my hair AND my make-up. The trifecta. This is a rarity and a precious gift indeed! If you’re a Mama, you get it! Not having little hands grabbing at me as I attempt to dry my hair or having to say, “NO…don’t eat that….stop!” as I smear mascara all over my face, that was a nice change of pace.
We started the evening at Vic’s on the River. There is so much history held in the bricks of this building. Nestled right along Bay St., it’s various levels include an event space, indoor and outdoor dining and a cute coffee shop on the bottom floor which looks out onto the river. After an extremely warm day (humidity made it feel like 102…eek!), the evening air was surprisingly cool, creating the perfect ambiance as we sat out on the patio, taking in the local culture and embracing the rarity of it just being the two of us. The food was to die for. I learned that it’s hard to go wrong with ordering seafood in this town!
Gems we discovered:
- We ventured to Rocks on the Roof which is a rooftop bar at the Bohemian Hotel that has a 360 degree view of Savannah. It is stunning and such a fun atmosphere to take in the city.
- We love craft beers, so Moon River Brewing Company was a must! Their delicious beers can be enjoyed inside, on their huge outdoor patio or better yet can be taken to-go thanks to Savannah’s open container law! With beverages in hand, we continued to explore the city and it’s gorgeous walkways, parks and food!
- Sweet Melissa’s is Savannah’s version of Late Night Slice, which Ryan and I love, so we were thrilled when we stumbled upon it! Their pizza’s large and in charge!
Thank you Savannah for showing us your charm. I’m so grateful for the gift of quality time, conversation and laughter. I hope to never forget who we are together. It’s date nights like these that serve to remind me that taking time of us is more than just healthy, it’s necessary. It makes us better parents and better spouses. Though our lives look so much different than they did four years ago when we said “I Do”, I love this crazy life of ours.
